Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Simple pantry ingredients: You probably already have everything you need on hand.
  • Bold flavor: It adds a sweet-spicy punch that elevates even the most basic dishes.
  • Versatile and make-ahead friendly: Keeps well in the fridge and goes with everything from grilled meats to cheese boards.

Ingredients

This sweet and spicy balsamic glaze uses just 3 pantry staples for the ultimate flavor packed sauce!

A measuring cup of balsamic vinegar sits next to small bowls of honey and red pepper flakes on a neutral countertop.
  • Balsamic vinegar: The base of the glaze. Choose a good quality balsamic for the richest, most balanced flavor. Aged or slightly syrupy versions work best.
  • Honey: Adds natural sweetness and helps thicken the glaze into that irresistible sticky texture.
  • Red pepper flakes: Brings in a subtle kick. Start with ¼ teaspoon and adjust to your preferred heat level.

See the recipe card below for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Substitutions & Variations

Feel like switching things up? These simple swaps and flavor twists let you make this spicy glaze your own.

  • For a vegan version, swap the honey with pure maple syrup or brown sugar. The flavor is slightly earthier but still delicious.
  • To bring smoky flavor, try adding a dash of chipotle chili powder or smoked paprika with the red pepper flakes.
  • Want a hint of garlic? Toss in a minced garlic clove as the glaze simmers.
  • For a fruit-forward twist, stir in a splash of orange juice or cherry juice after the glaze reduces for a Southern-inspired flair.
  • This recipe yields about ⅓-1/2 cup, so you can make a double batch and store it in the fridge to use throughout the week!

How to Make Spicy Balsamic Glaze Reduction

Follow these simple steps to make this easy spicy balsamic glaze at home in just 15 minutes.

Balsamic vinegar, honey, and red pepper flakes are combined in a saucepan before simmering.

Step 1: Combine balsamic vinegar, honey, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan.

The glaze thickens in the saucepan as it's whisked into a glossy, syrupy consistency.

Step 2: Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the glaze coats the back of a spoon.

Step 3: Let it cool slightly. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

Step 4: Transfer to a small jar and use immediately or store in the fridge.

Tips For the Best Spicy Balsamic Glaze

Want that perfectly smooth, drizzle-worthy glaze every time? Here's what helps most:

  • Simmer low and slow once it comes to a gentle boil. Reducing too quickly can burn the sugars.
  • Use a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan to prevent scorching and allow even heat distribution.
  • Stir every couple of minutes so the glaze doesn't stick to the bottom.
  • To check if it's ready, dip in a spoon. It should coat the back and drip slowly.
  • If it gets too thick after cooling, stir in a splash of warm water to loosen it up before serving.
  • This glaze is incredible on grilled peaches, roasted Brussels sprouts, Caprese salads, or even over soft cheeses like goat cheese or brie with crackers.
  • You can also use it in salad dressings by whisking it with extra virgin olive oil and a splash of Dijon mustard for an easy, flavorful vinaigrette.
A wooden spoon dips into the finished spicy balsamic glaze, showing its rich, glossy texture.

Storage

This glaze keeps so well and is easy enough to make ahead to have on hand when you need a flavor boost!

  • Refrigerate in a sealed glass jar or airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
  • It will thicken more as it chills. Just warm it up slightly in the microwave or in a pan with a splash of water to bring it back to drizzle consistency.
  • Make it ahead for easy entertaining, meal prep, or quick weeknight dinners.
  • Freezing isn't ideal. It can cause separation, so just make small batches as needed.

FAQ

What's the difference between balsamic glaze and balsamic reduction?

They're essentially the same. A glaze is just a reduced balsamic vinegar, often sweetened. This version adds a little kick too.

Is this glaze very spicy?

It has a mild to moderate kick. You can adjust the spice level by increasing or decreasing the red pepper flakes.

Can I make balsamic glaze sugar-free?

Absolutely, just reduce the balsamic vinegar on its own without any added sweetener. It will be tangier and less syrupy, but still flavorful. You can also try using a sugar-free alternative like monk fruit sweetener or allulose for a lower-sugar option that still gives that sweet, thick finish.
